Bridge House

Location: Olive Bridge, New York. United States Year of construction: /996 Architect: Peter Gluck Photography: Paul Warchol

The house acts as a bridge, providing access between different areas of the wood.

This house in the woods of Olive Bridge near New York is a holiday retreat, a kind of private hotel to which the owners invite their family and friends. Peter Gluck had to adapt to a site that, though stimulating in many ways, also had a steep incline. Rather than trying to adapt the building to the topography, the house Gluck designed is placed on the site with almost no modification.

The building consists of three separate, well – defined units with different characters that blend together. This approach is typical of Gluck’s recent work: from a functional or schematic division he constructs a complex group of different but interrelated buildings.

In this instance the structures consist of a two-story cube faced with artificial stone, a traditional ridge-roofed building, and a bridge or tunnel raised on piles and clad in corrugated metal sheeting.

The house acts as a bridge or link between two different areas.

Peter Gluck uses a wide variety of materials, colors, and finishes. He also works with clear geometric elements that interrelate in a complex manner.
