Coombs House

This Californian residence is located on top of a hill, giving it panoramic views of the countryside. The building is structured around different sections that house the various domestic facilities.

The warm climate made thick stone walls a sensible choice for the elevations. This building system is inspired by traditional, popular architecture and gives the structure increased thermal inertia. The result is that in winter the heat given off by the heating system does not escape through the walls, nor does the cold enter through them. In summer the fiercest rays of the sun lose their strength as they pass through the thick stone.

The architecture of California is typically a blend, a mixture of trends ranging from the Mexican vernacular, incorporating the modern innovations of Richard Neutra and other architects of his period, and adopting the technological advances of the present day.

The entire building is governed by a minimalization of feature. This formal reduction can also be seen in the choice of materials, of which there are basically three: stone, wood, and glass. The interior design and furnishings are also plain but powerful: the simplification of form produces a direct and forceful effect.

A system of pillars on the exterior defines the outside leisure area. The swimming pool serves a number of functions: it is not only a place where you can enjoy a swim, but it also has a cooling effect and produces reflections of light and color that make it a genuine delight for the senses.

The detailed design of the swimming pool gives it a key role. The sheet of water merges with the landscape around and the reflections of light and color make this an ideal spot to enjoy magnificent sunsets.

Plain and simple elegance is the keynote of the spacious interiors. Their simplicity makes the few decorative objects present all the more striking in this minimal yet powerful setting.
