Casa Amat

Location: A/ella, Barcelona. Spain Year of construction: 1993 Architect: Antoni de Moragas Photography: Llufs Casals

The plot on which the house has been built is almost square and virtually flat, even though it is not level with the neighboring house. This difference in height facilitated the construction of a basement on the plot. It has been used to provide a parking area, with access from the street located to the east, as well as a series of rooms intended for various purposes and some service areas.

Inside, the organization of the house stems from a completely regular volume: it is a box with two floors going from one side of the plot to the other, from east to west. A tunnel crosses the building and joins the yard in the north part with the one in the south part: two different spaces used alternately throughout the year, one for winter and the other for summer.

The two master bedrooms with private bathroom and dressing room are located on the second floor, as well as two double bedrooms arranged symmetrically with the latter, each with bathroom and dressing room. They all look over a wide, open veranda, although they also have north-facing windows, looking toward the rear of the house.

The roof is made of copper and describes a gentle curve that is almost imperceptible when the house is viewed from the front, but is much more evident on the lateral facades.

The walls are made of stuccoed and painted brick on the first floor and are wood-paneled on the second floor. The window frames of both the sliding windows and the fixed ones are made of galvanized steel.

The yard decking is made of wood specially suitable for outdoor use and is slightly higher than the level of the lawn.

Views of che veranda that provides protection from excessive light. The light filtering through the fence sketches different colors and textures on the walls. The colors of these walls are warm, going from ocher to yellow and red.

General view of the living room, dining room, and its furniture: two large French windows provide access to the yard and the veranda.

Due to its widch, the hall leading to the single flight of stairs is positioned transversely within the area.
