House in Mallorca

Location: Mallorca, Spain Year of construction: 1990 Architect: Pere Nicolai/ Photography: Francesc Tur

Mindful of the sea, the pines, the slope of the mountain, popular culture, and contemporary architecture – the signs of a special language emerge from this house, which is an example of what Pere Nicolau’s conscience and professionalism offer as an alternative to the systematic destruction of the Mallorcan coastline.

This detached house is situated in the Marmassem cove in the port of Andratx, at the top of a very pronounced slope with a thick pine wood as the most immediate environment. It has been placed in the landscape with subtlety and respect, carefully following the slope of the plot by using terraces.

On a foundation that is only slightly irregular and starting from a remit to meet the needs of normal family life, a profound bond with the sea, and rather stressed austerity, Nicolau sorted the daily activities of this house on three floors.

The first or entrance floor has a living room that connects with the roofed terrace next to the sea, which can be seen between the crowns of the pines, the splendid dining-living room, the kitchen, and a library; this level also includes the garage and the staff area. The upper floor contains the four bedrooms and three bathrooms, one of which is incorporated in the dressing room of the master suite. These rooms all have open terraces looking over the trees to the sea; they have been designed to act as suntraps. Finally, in the basement, next to the swimming pool, there is the leisure section: the rooms connected with washing and bathing, the children’s rooms, and sports areas.

Outside, whatever is not glass or exposed stone is white. The walls, the pillars, and the shutters are this color, to contrast with the blue of the sea, the green of the pines, the ocher of the quarry stones, and the sky.
