Judenburg. Frauengasse is The first (our-story wood structure in Austria, taking advantage of mnovative new technology – including solid wood / cross-laminated panels and pre fabricated laminated balconies. The structure provides 24 apartments ranging in size from 300-950 sq ft., retail space 31 ground level, and an underground garage This housing type is part of a new urban master plan which was designed by MACK Architects after winning an invited international competition The building faces south and is connected to a small neighborhood heating facility and derives energy ihroug’n solar collectors |

The competition was in search of ideas for a distinctive image for youth hostels. Originally the architects intended to have the individual units prefabricated in solid wood and transported by lorry to the site. The facades, interiors and the customised furniture are also made of modular elements. The living-contamers, resting on concrete footings, are distributed throughout the two buildings, and frame – along with an existing tree – a level terrace. This courtyard extends underneath the cantilever of the upper block, in which on the ground floor a commons is available for rainy-day activities. |
The design aims to blur The boundaries between man-made space and the "nature"of suburban claims by postulatmy a natural artificiality on tho lower level. This level is organized as an open plan, with kitchen, bath and bedroom. The upper floor relates to the more common understanding of dwelling in a suburban context
