Museum of the Papyrus (Papyrussammlung)

The Vienna collection of the museum of the Papyrus (Papyrussammlung) is considered the largest in world papyrology. It contains 180 тыщ the objects illustrating Ancient Egyptian history for three millennia. Two hundred objects are included by an invariable exposition of Papyrussammlung. In a museum of Papyruses the exhibitions directed on a certain subject on researches in papyrology are held; there is a scientific library.

The emergence the museum Papyrussammlung owes the German orientalist, the doctor of history of the East from the Vienna institute – to Joseph Karabatsek. It classified and has subjected to the historical analysis a collection of the papyruses, acquired ertsgertsogy Ranier in 1882.

Since 1899 ducal meeting has been transferred to the Austrian State library. Then the collection contained about 100000 papyruses – from decent rolls to the malekhanky scraps, many – in a shabby condition. The main part consisted of nonliterary, household texts: accounts, receipts, letters and wills, school books of problems and business contracts.

The most part of papyruses represents a late, Byzantian era of Egypt. The third part of documents is written by the Arab font; it is a lot of papyruses on Greek (being considered as language of management and the highest estate); a part – in Coptic language. The most valuable exhibit has considered a hand-written piece of the score of accident of Evripid of "Orest".

Since 1998 the museum library and the Papyrussammlung exhibition are transferred to the New lock of a palace complex of Hofburg.
